How do I cancel my flight due to death or illness?

If you are not able to travel as a result of a death or personal illness, you may request the airline to cancel or change your flight free of charge. If you booked your flight with a low-cost carrier, like Spirit or Ryanair, you can contact the airline directly. For all other airlines, contact Hopper support.

Required documentation

For a death in the family

Airlines will accept an official death certificate for immediate family members. If the deceased relative does not share the same last name, proof of relationship will also be required.

For emergency medical situations

Airlines will only consider documents on an official hospital letterhead, signed and typed by a doctor. The document must provide a diagnosis and include the doctor's name and signature. Prescriptions are not accepted as valid documentation.

Refunds and waived fees are always at the discretion of the airline and never guaranteed.

Bookings made in the last 24 hours

If you made your booking within the last 24 hours, it may also still be possible to cancel free of charge. To see if you’re eligible, start canceling your flight and review the details on the Cancel My Trip screen.
