Do I need travel insurance?

We always recommend adding travel insurance to your booking. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to predict whether or not something unfortunate will come up that impacts your travel plans. Travel insurance helps alleviate some of those concerns. If you are traveling abroad, having medical protection is very important as many health insurance providers do not cover expenses outside of the U.S. Many countries now even require that you have medical coverage before entering the country.

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance protects individuals from unforeseen issues that may come up before or during a trip such as medical expenses incurred for covered accidents or illness, trip delay expenses, and baggage loss. 

When does my protection plan start and end?

If you’ve booked a round-trip ticket with Hopper, your protection plan starts the day of your departure and ends when you return back to your departure location.

If you’ve booked a one-way ticket with Hopper, the plan covers you for the duration of your one-way flight. The plan starts when you take off from your departure location and ends once you reach your final destination.

When can I file a travel insurance claim?

You can file a claim before, during, or after your trip. This will depend on your unique situation. If you have any questions on claims, you can contact AON at 1-877-738-6990.

How do I file a travel insurance claim?

You can easily file a claim through AON’s online portal - it takes less than 8 minutes! Before you start, be sure to take a look at what you need and gather all necessary documentation:

What is my Certificate of Insurance?

Your Certificate of Insurance (COI) can be found in your booking confirmation email. The link will take you to a page run by our insurance partner AON, where you can easily access all the details of your plan.

What does travel insurance cover and not cover?

Insurance policies vary depending on which state you live in, but here are some examples of what might be covered:

  • Your trip is cancelled or cut short out of your control
  • You have unexpected medical costs
  • Your flight is delayed by more than 6 hours
  • Your baggage gets lost in transit

How do I buy travel insurance and how much does it cost?

You can buy travel insurance directly in the app when booking a flight! Before you finalize and book your trip, you will have the option to add travel insurance on to your booking. The cost of travel insurance varies depending on the cost of the trip, but the price will always be displayed in the app before purchase.

If you'd like to add travel insurance, be sure to add it before swiping to pay, as it can only be added to your trip at the time of payment.

What do I do if something happens while I'm on a trip?

If something happens while you’re on a trip, you can immediately file a claim online. If you have any questions about your plan, or your options as they pertain to your plan, you can contact AON at 1-877-738-6990. Be sure to tell them that you are already on your trip. 

Important Information about baggage and flight delay

If your bag or flight is delayed while on your trip, be sure to keep any receipts for things you purchase while you wait to recover your bags or for your flight to depart. You will need these when filing a claim online. If your bags are permanently lost, damaged, or stolen, you will need receipts for the contents inside the bags and the bags themselves.

Good to know

  • Please note that travel insurance cannot be purchased over the phone or email but when available, you can add travel insurance to your booking before completing the purchase in the app. Unfortunately, we cannot add insurance to your booking once the booking has been completed. 
  • Travel insurance should be purchased for each individual traveller as one insurance policy does not cover everyone traveling in a group. When booking in the app, you will be given the option to add insurance for each traveller on that trip. 
  • Please note that Trip Protection is a different product from Hopper's Refundable Ticket Plan. For more information, click here.
